Enter: New York band Wake the Sun. Hailing from the shores of Long Island and gearing up for the start of their second tour through the U.S. (and their first foray into a foreign country… well kind of – they’re going to Canada), Wake the Sun delivers a sound so gritty and honest that you won’t be able to help but be enamored. Next thing you know you’ll be trying to grow your hair out like lead-singer Dillon Mealey. Unfortunately, not everyone has the requisite persona for that hair. But who am I to tell you what to do… go for it homie.
This most recent release, the band’s second official music video following last winter’s “Wicked Souls,” is a product of Rust Films. “Grace and Faith” is a story of hardship and struggle and the triumph over adversity. This music video is a provocative presentation of delicate topics: bullying, child abuse, fear of commitment, jealousy, and disillusionment towards one’s family. From the evocative real-life scenes to the almost ethereal depiction of the band, this music video does a lot to grab the audience’s attention.
Wake the Sun plays an exciting brand of rugged blues rock. Listen to this song’s unrelenting guitar lines. Listen to the gripping vocals of the chorus. There are various layers that make up this song and that make up this video. And that is one of the signs of quality work; there should always be something new to discover when returning to a song, something fresh to think about. That is something you will find with Wake the Sun.
Wake the Sun released their debut eponymous EP last March. Give it a listen; it’s well worth your time. Also, if you have the chance to see Wake the Sun live on their North American tour, I highly recommend you do so. No matter how exciting you might find this band through their recordings and videos, experiencing their live show is on a totally different level of rock n’ roll. Check out the tour dates on the band’s website. Side note – if you’re trying to rock out with me this Sunday night, I’ll be at New York City’s Bowery Electric, watching Wake the Sun blow the roof off the place.
